The World Tomorrow

In 1934, Herbert Armstrong founded the Radio Church of God beginning at a 100-watt station, KORE Eugene, Oregon. The ministry soon renamed itself the Worldwide Church of God and the broadcasts were known as The World Tomorrow. This name was taken from the theme of the 1939 York World's Fair, "The World of Tomorrow".  Tomorrow must have been a slippery concept for Armstrong and the WCG because a large portion of Armstrong's ministry dealt with the "End Times" and his interpretations on the New Testament's Book of Revelations.

Born in Des Moines, Iowa, 1892, Armstrong had a less than moderately successful career in advertising in Des Moines and eventually moved his family to Oregon seeking better opportunities. His wife became part of a Church of God (Seventh Day) congregation, and Herbert became an ordained minister in the sect. As part of the Adventist movement, a belief in an imminent Second Coming (or Second Advent) of Jesus Christ was central to members of the Church of God (Seventh Day).

Soon after Armstrong's ministry on KORE began to be successful, leaders of the Church of God (Seventh Day) came to believe that he had become too arrogant for the good of the Church. With his ministry rapidly expanding through the radio, Armstrong was free to preach on matters of personal importance. He taught a form of British Israelism, a believe that Western Europeans were directly descended from one of the Twelve Lost Tribes of Israel. He further preached that Hitler and Mussolini were manifestations of the Beast and False Prophet of Revelations, not a hard concept to sell at the time until he associated them with an imminent Second Coming which would occur at the end of the coming General War.

The predicted War did come, although its conclusion did not include the arrival of the Savior. The Worldwide Church of God continued to expand, and while awaiting the Second Advent, Armstrong was able to purchase a mansion on "Millionaire's Row" just off the Rose Parade route in Pasadena, California.
