Western Spoofs

In the late 1940s and 1950s, the Western genre was ubiquitous in film, radio, television, and music.  It seemed that every boy wanted to grow up to be a cowboy as the rugged western life was romanticized in the media.  There is an archetype of the lone masculine cowboy and his horse was developed in these shows. 

Notable Western old time radio shows include Gunsmoke, The Lone Ranger, Have Gun with Travel, Six Shooter, and Frontier Gentleman.  Popular western music shows made during this time include All Star Western Theater, Melody Ranch, National Barn Dance, Ten-Two-Four Ranch and many more.

With an abundance of material to tease out of the western genre, many brilliant comedians created comedy skits with a western theme including Jack Benny, Red Skeleton, Fred Allen, and more.   

Some shows include guest appearances with famed cowboys and cowgirls. Be on the look out for some sing alongs, such as in Bing Crosby show or when Roy Rogers visited the Bergen and McCarthy show.
