United Nations Radio (UN Radio)

"United Nations Radio" began broadcasting in 1946 from the United Nations Headquarters in Lake Success, New York. The first call sign broadcast: "This is the United Nations calling the peoples of the world."

UN Radio was established by a General Assembly Resolution stating "the UN cannot achieve the purposes for which it was created unless the peoples of the world are fully informed of its aims and activities."

These documentary and dramatic programs are productions of the United Nations radio service, and feature the talents of several Hollywood stars.1948's Between the Dark and the Daylight features broadcasting pioneer Edward R. Murrow telling the stories of needy children in post-war Europe. Also from 1948, Year of Decision is a report by actor John Garfield on atomic energy, made after President Truman announced the atomic bomb.

Gary Cooper explores the struggle against addiction in the 1950 report Shooting Gallery.A UN expedition that traveled 25,000 miles in 100 days throughout Southeast Asia is highlighted in Jungle in Retreat, narrated in 1952 by dancer Gene Kelly.

The Korean Conflict is remembered by Dick Powell in 1953's The Korea Story. In the same year the tragic aftermath and human toll is report in the Helen Hayes narrated Quiet War.

The Day It Happened, 1954, dramatizes the work of the International Red Cross through the talents of Madeleine Carroll, Franchot Tone, and writer Lowell Thomas. Also in 1954, actor Melvyn Douglas helps to celebrate the ninth anniversary of the UN, with No Trumpets.
