NEHI sponsored a music program...The NEHI Program. This airwave program that entranced millions of listeners every week was a blend of the special sing-along music and snappy tunes that were the fab for the 1930's. NEHI took incredible pride in presenting a homespun format that drew Americans to their radio tube boxes. Many episodes would begin with the delightful tones of Veronica Wiggins introducing the program each week.
Music in My Fingers
Besides being the first song for this episode that came out in 1932, this tune brought many a toe a tapping as the mom and pop listened with quiet rhapsody. Veronica Wiggins followed up with a soprano melody of "Kiss in the Dark". You can bet many a male listener daydreamed of such a venture with the lovely virtuoso. "The Very Best Girl" was a mini play that came on with Tom Jackson that was simply a format for NEHI to convey the message of their soft drink commerce. This episode told of a 6,000 dollar contest. Then back to the music. Start tapping your toes as you get "Snuggled on Your Shoulder". dreaming time again.
Time On My Hands
This weeks show started with the NEHI ensemble orchestrally supporting Miss Wiggins with "Time On My Hands". Much of this episode followed up with the quartet tones of the Roundeliers crooning "MandyLee". Then Welcome Tom Jackson and the miniplay for the NEHI $6,000 contest. Guess the officer in this play won't doddle writing a ticket when he can try for green to himself and not the jail. "I'm So In Love" is what conveyed next with George Sackley and his orchestra. Ah but why give a blow by blow when you can hear it all for yourself.
Many of the episodes of the NEHI Program's would end with Norman Brokenshire announcing the NEHI contests and great flavors. This program was an amazing sidebar tot he conflicts and turmoil of the 1930's. Simplicity, carefree and sweet dreams was the NEHI way. Ah, when flavors were simple and radio was sweet...or visa versa. Anyway, daydream a NEHI dream.
