Meet the Menjous was a 1950's program that brought the title named couple together to share their intellect and perspective to teach a "lesson". For example in the discussion of "luck" the Menjous shared the creation of the show The Cisco Kid and the discovery of rubber by Charles Goodyear. The program continues to display the treatment of brain disease from bringing the temperatures of people to a high displacement. Just sheer "luck" according to the episode in question. Are you feeling smarter already?
Many people may not realize that Mr Menjou is question was the notable Adolphe Menjou. The actor, that rubbed shoulders with the likes of Clark Gable and John Barrymore, shared the microphone with his wife (at that time) of almost twenty years. Verree Teasdale was an actress as well and would be Mrs Menjou throughout Adolphe's life. In the episode that the couple used to educate the American public on the proper way to throw a party and how the hosts should behave, transitioned into the in depth conversation on slang, its use and it' liks history.
Adolphe and Verree regaled in debating and dialoging over the idioms and slang that encompassed the public of the day.
The twosome knew how to play off of each other with charm, intellect and wit. For example, when discussing the party host topic, they agreed to disagree on the place of the lady within the celebratory settings. Verree was an avowed be with the men as they had the important dialog going on. Adolphe was inclined to feel a woman might be more at ease with her gender. But even with the banter, never barbed, the Menjous favored decorum and substance over a challenge to who was right. That was the way with Meet the Menjous, the program illustrated a bent to disarming the audience with trivial, but honest repartee.
"Thank you for inviting us into your home; may we call again soon" was the calling card ending that Adolphe Menjou would sign-off with until the next the show. America loved the "professors" of insight and trivia. "May we call again soon?"
