When we think about classical music for strings, we usually imagine chamber music. Chamber music is written for small, intimate groups of musicians, usually soloists, duets, trios, quartets or quintets. Indeed, Goethe described chamber music as "four rational people conversing".
The string orchestra, on the other hand, has enough players to require a conductor to guide them and join the many voices into music. The power of each instrument is magnified so that the music is greater than the sum of its parts.
