Danish-American opera tenor, Lauritz Melchior best known for his performances of Wagner's works, but he also had a great sense of humor and made guest appearances on radio with Fred Allen.
Lauritz Melchior began his opera career as a boy soprano in his home of Denmark. At the age of 18, he began training as a tenor at Copenhagen's premier Royal Opera school. After colleague Ms. Charles Cahier heard him perform some soprano notes in a performance, she encouraged him to retrain his voice to become a tenor. Studying under tenor Vilhelm Herold, Melchior spent a year retraining his voice and made his debut as a tenor in 1918.
Interested in radio as early as 1920, when he participated in an experimental radio broadcast in a European Marconi station.
Lauritz Melchior became an American citizen in 1947, residing in Los Angeles. Melchior performed in several films usually as himself and made numerous television and radio appearances. This collection includes guest appearances of Lauritz Melchior in various old time radio shows.
