I wanted to update my previous article about my unique way of listening to my old time radio shows. I am a 46 year old male who listens to different shows on different days in a scheduled format on my cellphone as if it was a real radio network. The shows I own are Our Miss Brooks, The Life of Riley, Archie Andrews, Blondie, Burns and Allen, The Aldrich Family, My Favorite Husband, Fibber McGee and Molly and my newest acquisitions the serial Jerry of the Circus and its sequel serial Jerry at Fair Oaks.
I also have additional shows that are not complete series but complement the series I have such as the three versions of Backseat Driver from Suspense, two of which starred Jim and Marion Jordan of Fibber McGee and Molly fame, the Lux Radio Theater version of The Life of Riley movie, radio versions of several movies and assorted shows starring Jim and Marion Jordan, assorted shows and interviews with Jim Jordan after Marion's death, interview with Bob Hastings who played Archie Andrews, the I Love Lucy radio audition, the Truth or Consequences episode with William Bendix as his Life of Riley character, The Jack Benny Show guest hosted by George Burns and Gracie Allen, and several others. I also have audio from several skits from The Carol Burnett Show as well.
I started a new "season" back on Labor Day, September 5th, which is when tv networks traditionally start their fall season. And (as of the time I am writing this) I am getting ready to start another season in January, another traditional date. I made big changes to my schedule in September including adding two new (to me) radio serials, Jerry of the Circus and its sequel Jerry at Fair Oaks. I am very happy with this current schedule in fact therefore I have no plans to change my schedule in January.
I have also finished special holiday-themed programming which included Chico's Christmas Classics (named after my beloved dog who passed away several years ago) which include Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's episodes of all my shows except Fibber McGee and Molly (played on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day) and Chico's Christmas Classics Presents A Fibber McGee and Molly Holiday Special which included Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's themed episodes of Fibber McGee and Molly (played on the Wednesdays of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's weeks). Another special block of programming that I do is Chico's Classics: AFRS on JCRS Radio which is the Armed Forces Radio Service versions that I have of all my shows (played on Black Friday, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day). There are additional special programming throughout the year as well.
My current schedule:
Sunday: |
Every Sunday is Super Sunday. Every other Sunday is My Favorite Husband and The Aldrich Family all randomly shuffled. The other Sundays is Burns and Allen, My Favorite Husband, and The Aldrich Family all randomly shuffled. |
Monday- Tuesday |
Radio Jewelguy featuring most of my shows (The Life of Riley, The Aldrich Family, Blondie, Archie Andrews, My Favorite Husband, and Our Miss Brooks plus 100 randomly selected Burns and Allen and 250 randomly selected Fibber McGee and Molly [both half hour and 15-minute episodes]) all randomly shuffled. Jerry of the Circus and Jerry at Fair Oaks are not included. |
Wednesday | Every Wednesday is "Wistful Wednesday" Every other Wednesday is Fibber McGee and Molly half hour episodes all randomly shuffled. The other Wednesdays is Fibber McGee and Molly 15-minute episodes in order since the storylines sometimes took several episodes to complete. |
Thursday | The Life of Riley all randomly shuffled. |
Friday | Our Miss Brooks all randomly shuffled. |
Saturday | Every Saturday is Saturday Morning Radiotoons All-Day. Every other Saturday is Archie Andrews and Blondie all randomly shuffled. The other Saturdays is the serial Jerry of the Circus shown in order. When it is completed, it is followed by the sequel Jerry at Fair Oaks shown in order. The Jerry serials are a bi-Saturday exclusive meaning they are not part of Radio Jewelguy on Mondays and Tuesdays. |
I watch very little tv anymore. Instead, I prefer to listen to my old time radio shows. A lot of people get excited about yearly holiday specials airing on tv every holiday season. For me, I will look forward to my own holiday specials such as Chico's Christmas Classics and The Fibber McGee and Molly Holiday Special.
I believe that this unique way of listening to my old time radio shows have dramatically reduced my stress and mental anguish and helped keep depression away. And no matter how exhausted I am from work (and it has been very exhausting this holiday season), it's a relaxing comfort to listen to my scheduled radio shows which I had been looking forward to the entire work day. And I do listen to my old time radio shows each and every day no matter how busy my day is going to be.
I believe that hobbies are essential in life and I believe that old time radio shows make a great hobby. And there are no rules on how to listen to them. Correction: There is one rule. You must enjoy listening to old time radio shows. And definitely listen to your old time radio shows the way that you like and want..
