She came to fame with Benny Goodman. Although she was so scared at her first recording session ("Elmer's Tune") that John Hammond urged Goodman to fire her. Thankfully, Goodman did not heed his friend's warnings, because Peggy Lee would go on to record over 650 songs and 60 + albums, many which have become gold records. Never improvising much, Peggy Lee had a small voice but her singing often crossed over into jazz. She has appeared throughout the world to standing-room-only audiences. Her many talents and humanitarian endeavors have provided her with a myriad of credentials, including an Academy Award "Oscar" nomination, the New York Film Critic's Award, the National Brotherhood of Christians and Jews, numerous citations from the Cancer Society, the Heart Fund, among hundreds of others.
