There is something about a sea voyage which seems to make good radio. Perhaps it is the utter isolation of passengers and crew which remind us of a broadcasting studio, cut off from the outside world. Or it could be that the simple diversions which seem so important at sea work well on the radio.
The mid-Thirties syndicated program Nonsense and Melody has a decidedly nautical bent, with the action taking place aboard the mythical SS Hysteria. The show is a variety program in the tradition of The Jack Benny Program and The Fleischmanns Yeast Hour. Since the show is syndicated, there are long musical interludes rather than sponsor announcements, and the comic hosts act as their own announcers.
They segue into the opening interlude by introducing "Nonsense and Melody with Gill. And Demling". Frank Gill Jr. and Bill Demling are both listed as writers later in their careers, but the puns and jokes come fast and furious on Nonsense and Melody. Along with the music of the program's vocal group, The Jack Tars, girl singer Bernadine Miller and Andy Sannela and His Orchestra, the 15 minute program usually features a fast pace comic drama.
As well as their shipboard antics, the gang also visits Egypt, the Swiss Alps, Gay Paree and the canals of Venice.
I love the variety of acts and performers on the show, from comedians to musical acts. The host, with his smooth voice and impeccable timing, always knows how to keep the audience entertained. I never know what to expect next and that's part of the excitement of the show. One moment, I'm laughing out loud at a joke, and the next I'm humming along to a romantic ballad. The show truly has something for everyone, and I never tire of listening to it.
