WHAM in Rochester, NY, and Heartbeats in Sports Headlines' sponsor, the Ridge Lumber Company, knew how important it was to start the day thinking about the sporting life in 1950-1951.
It was with that notion in mind that they enlisted WHAM announcer Mort Nusbaum to read Heartbeats in Sports Headlines. Stories included the track prowess of the great Jesse Owens, the daring of catcher Gabby Street who caught a baseball tossed from the top of the 500 ft high Washington Monument. Also in the mix are Johnny Hayes, Lou Jenkins, Jesse Hill and others.
Heartbeats was never meant to be a replacement for the sports page, but it makes very good listening.
